BARRY JONES – Barnaby Road, SOUTHEND

30 JUNE 2017

A PAEDOPHILE who called viewing child abuse images a “regular pastime” after police found his stash of more than 30,000 sick photos was spared jail.

Barry Jones, of Barnaby Road, Southend, told police he was “addicted” to the online images when they raided his home in December.

Basildon Crown Court heard the 47-year-old downloaded images and movies featuring the abuse of boys and girls as young as two-years-old.

Christopher Paxton, prosecuting, said the collection of images was “extensive” and featured a “broad range” of victims.

He said: “It varies from very young babies right through to older children in a variety of different poses and a variety of acts.”

The collection consisted of more than 4,000 still images and 200 movies in the most serious Category A. There were more than 7,000 stills and 80 movies in Category B. Jones also had more than 20,000 still images and 50 Category C movies.

Mr Paxton said: “In interview he said he was addicted to viewing the images and he would look at images of both boys and girls. He said it had become a regular pastime.

“He described it as his dirty secret because he was, at the time, a working man.”

Jones also admitted possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate, in relation to two bullets he had for display purposes.

Miss Steggles, mitigating, said Jones had been “candid” and “honest” since his arrest.

She said: “It’s been going on for a long time and he accepts that. From reading the probation report, Mr Jones feels isolated socially and in his relationships.

“With that, there has been a reliance on alcohol and a reliance on drugs.

“As it’s a small community it’s been all over Facebook and there have been consequences to him as a result of that.

“He accepts he has a problem and he’s asking for help with that problem.”

Judge John Lodge said Jones had been “downloading this filth for a long period of time.”

However, he said a custodial sentence would not allow Jones to take part in an internet sex offender treatment programme, recommended by the probation service, and neither would a suspended sentence.

Jones was handed a 36 month community order, during which he must complete 150 hours of unpaid work and take part in the treatment programme.

He must also sign the sex offenders register for 15 years and pay £500 costs.

HARRY GOWDY – DERBYSHIRE

30 JUNE 2017

Victims of sexual abuse have been urged to come forward after well-known Burton cake maker Harry Gowdy was jailed for abusing a young girl.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police has said victims who come forward to report such offences will be treated with the “utmost sensitivity” as he went to praise Gowdy’s victim for her bravery.

Gowdy admitted sexual assaulting the girl aged under 13 at the time while sharing several indecent images with her a few years later.

He has been jailed for six years following an appearance at Stafford Crown Court last week.

The 61-year-old, now of Ash Street, Ilkeston, in Derbyshire but formerly from Branston, ran HK Celebrations in Burton Market Hall and later on the first floor of The Octagon shopping centre. The court heard he lured the girl before sexually assaulting her.

It comes as Burton Mail readers have shared their shock at the news that the 61-year-old is a paedophile. Gowdy had made wedding cakes for many people while running his HK Celebrations. He later closed the business at the beginning of 2016 citing ill health at the time.

Ruth Wileman wrote on the Burton Mail’s Facebook page: “He told me he was shutting due to being ill so did his family members! I feel sick I ever spoke to him.”

Meanwhile, Samantha Littlewood said: “I had cake lessons from him and I can’t believe it. Never a truer word spoken ‘you don’t really know someone’.”

Matt Pyke said: “Oh my God. We had our cakes from him. I am in shock.”

Now Staffordshire police have spoken out to encourage other victims to come forward.

A spokesman said: “The victim’s bravery in disclosing what happened to them is to be commended and I hope it encourages other victims to speak out.

“It does not matter how long ago such crimes occurred, we are committed to carrying out a detailed investigation with the utmost sensitivity to bring offenders to justice.

“I wish to stress that help and support is available to victims of sexual offences and they are not alone. We continue to work closely with partner agencies who provide specialist support.”

NICHOLAS BRAND, High street, CHATHAM

30 JUNE 2017

A Chatham man has been jailed for 13 years after sexually abusing a young child.

Nicholas Brand, 54, of High Street, Chatham, had denied the two counts of assault with a child but was convicted by a jury at Maidstone Crown Court in May.

Under the terms of his sentence imposed by Judge Julian Smith yesterday (June 29), he will have to serve two thirds of his sentence before he is up for release and will be on licence for a further six years.

Judge Smith said it was clear Brand was a “danger to young children” and had taken “no responsibility” for his crimes against an extremely vulnerable child.

He said: “You cannot be trusted to be left alone with any young children.

“The child was extremely vulnerable.”

Brand, who formerly worked as a bus driver and a labourer gave no evidence at trial despite protesting his innocence.

James Ross, who was defending Brand, said his client “knows full well he will go to prison for a long time”.

“What he does understand is that he must never be in a position again where he is left unsupervised with young children,” he said.

He added Brand had been in a relationship with a woman for a number of years and she was dependent on him.

Brand was her “carer” and she had a number of health issues, he was concerned she would become homeless if he was sent to prison.

Brand had a previous conviction for abusing a child of seven and a child of nine while he was a lodger in a pub in 1997.

A sexual harm prevention order was also placed on Brand.

If you see this double rapist on the run contact police immediately.

A double rapist is being hunted by police after he went missing earlier this month.
Sean Perry, 46, also goes by the names Sean Cawthray and Sean Goldthorpe, was last seen in Leicester city centre on June 19.
He was due to return to his probation-approved address at 2pm, but failed to do so meaning he was in breach of his prison licence.
Perry was jailed for life in December 2002 after kidnapping a schoolgirl near Leeds. He has also served time for raping two other teenagers and has previously gone on the run.
He grabbed the 14-year-old by her hair and dragged her down an alleyway with his hand over her face.
A young boy heard her struggling as he played in a garden nearby and went to tell his grandfather.
The grandfather shouted at Perry who then fled the scene.
In 1993 he was jailed for the rape of a 20-year-old woman while he was a student at De Montfort University.
Before that he raped a girl, 15, and tried to rape another teenager in Leeds.
If you see him police are warning you not to approach him, but dial 101 immediately.

JAMES DONAGHUE – GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Convicted rapist James Donoghue on the loose after walking out of open prison

James Donoghue, 50, was jailed for attacking a woman by knifepoint in her own home

30 JUNE 2017

A convicted rapist is on the loose and police need your help to track him down.

James Donoghue, 50, was jailed for attacking a woman by knifepoint in her own home.

He had been staying at an open prison in South Gloucestershire until he just walked out of HMP Leyhill.

The prisoner was last seen at around 5pm yesterday.

He was serving a life sentence for a serious sexual assault, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said.

The Bristol Post reports that Donoghue was jailed in December 2009 for raping a 30-year-old woman at knifepoint after he broke into her home.

When he was sentenced, a judge ordered that he should spend at least 10 years in jail before he could be considered for parole.

Donoghue was living in a Maidstone bail hostel when he attacked the woman in the Fant area of Maidstone in July 2009. She disturbed him as he was burgling his second house of the day, days after being released from a prison sentence for previous burglaries.

He took “degrading” indecent pictures of her before sexually assaulting her then raping her twice, according to an original court report.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “He is described as white, approximately 5ft 10ins tall, of slight build, bald with blue eyes.”

“If anyone sees Donoghue or knows of his whereabouts, we’d ask you not to approach him but to call us immediately.”

If you see Donoghue you are asked to call 999 and provide the call handler with the reference 5217147605.

DAVID SIMMONS – SHEFFIELD

29 JUNE 2017

A rugby coach has been jailed after molesting young boys and filming hundreds of videos using spy cameras inside digital clocks and Lynx shower bottles hidden in changing rooms.

David Simmons, 26, was jailed for three years and eight months for 17 sexual offences at Southwark Crown Court after admitting the charges at an earlier hearing.

He exploited his position as a rugby coach, where he ran his own sessions and holiday clubs at more than 30 venues in south-west London, to hide the cameras inside digital clocks and shower gel bottles in showers and toilets.

Simmons also insisted boys should weigh themselves naked, claiming it was for body fat percentage tests, and secretly recorded them using his iPhone or iPad.

His role included selecting and coaching promising teenagers for a county representative side, including many academy players.

He also took the team on an overseas tour to Sweden.

GAYLE NEWLAND – Cheshire

June 29, 2017

A woman has been found guilty of sexual assault after tricking a female friend into having sex using a fake penis.
Gayle Newland, 27, from Cheshire, used an online persona, Kye Fortune, to trick the victim into having sex without consent.
The ‘astonishing deception’ went on for over two years.
Newland was given an eight-year sentence in November 2015 for the same offences, but this conviction was quashed last year and the judge demanded a retrial for the case after it was ruled the original judge had not been balanced and fair in his summing up.
However, at a retrial at Manchester Crown Court the jury found her guilty of sexual assault.
The plot involved Newland asking the victim to wear a blindfold each time they met up and had sex.
The victim also told the court that Newland wore a swimming suit and bandages to disguise her breasts, as well as a prosthetic penis and put on a deep voice to trick her.

She told the court she only found out she was having sex with Newland when she finally took off her mask.
In court, Newland claimed the victim knew that she was ‘Kye’, a character she created using a fake Facebook page containing photos of an American man, and that it was all part of a role play.

She told the court the victim wasn’t ordered to wear a mask or blindfold on the 10 occasions the pair met up.
The court heard the pair had spent over 100 hours together, as well as time chatting on the phone.
Prosecutor Simon Medland QC told the jury: “This manipulative, deceitful and very crafty young woman went to such astonishing lengths to control the complainant’s life and make her do the things the defendant wanted her to do.”
Three other women have since come forward to say they had also been fooled by ‘Kye’. One woman said she only became suspicious when she spotted a house that ‘looked American’ in the background of ‘his’ photos.

MUBASHAR MIRZA – Aspley Lane, NOTTINGHAM

29 JUNE 2017

A taxi driver who subjected a West Bridgford customer to an horrific sexual attack, has been locked up for 11 years.

Mubashar Mirza, 57, of Aspley Lane in Nottingham appeared at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday 28 June 2017) and pleaded guilty to the rape of a 42-year-old woman.

The woman had attended a colleague’s party in West Bridgford in January when she decided to cut the night short and get a taxi home. But instead of taking her straight home, her driver, Mubashar Mirza, continuously made sexual advances at her, he put her in fear of her life and then took her to a quiet location and raped her.

After being dropped off at home, the victim contacted a friend and then the police and Mirza was quickly arrested. He denied the offence at first but soon changed his account and pleaded guilty due to the strength of evidence against him. As well as the 11 year prison sentence, Mirza will also have to sign the sex offenders register for life.

DWAYNE ALAN SMITH – LINCOLN

29 JUNE 2017

A pub singer and guitarist from Lincoln who raped two women while they were sleeping has been told he will remain behind bars after judges rejected an appeal to set him free.

Dwayne Alan Smith of Tower Crescent was jailed for nine years at Nottingham Crown Court on November 4, 2016, after being found guilty of carrying out the despicable acts in Newark.

The 29-year-old’s first victim awoke to find Smith raping her, Lord Justice Flaux told London’s Appeal Court on Thursday, June 28.

Almost a year later, he raped a second woman while she was sleeping after they had consensual sex.

The prosecution case was that it was ‘too much of a coincidence’ for two women who did not know each other to make such similar accusations nearly a year apart.

Smith denied raping either victim, claiming they had fabricated the allegations because they were ‘ashamed about their behaviour’.

But the jury did not believe him and he was convicted of two counts of rape.

The trial judge ruled that he had no case to answer on a third rape charge involving a third complainant.

Mark van der Zwart, representing Smith, argued that his convictions were ‘unsafe’ and ought to be overturned.

The trial judge should not have refused to allow the two victims to be cross-examined about previous sexual behaviour.

And the judge should have discharged the jury after clearing Smith of the third rape count, added the barrister.

But Lord Justice Flaux said there was ‘no error’ in the judge’s rulings about cross-examination of the women.

He was also ‘right to refuse to discharge the jury’, he added.

“These convictions are safe and this appeal must be dismissed,” ruled the appeal judge, who was sitting with Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb and Sir John Royce.
